What your child will learn in volleyball lessons

Here's a look at what kids and teens learn in volleyball lessons and programs. Consult each program linked to above to learn specifics of what they teach.

Volleyball fundamentals. Volleyball lessons focus and refocus on the sport’s fundamentals. They offer a mix of instruction, drills, and gameplay. Kids practice serving, passing, hitting, attack, and defense. They also learn the rules of the game, as well as proper positional play for all positions. Lessons offer a great way for kids to get a holistic understanding of the sport, broken down into all of its parts.

Improved volleyball technique. Volleyball lessons enhance players’ individual skills to become better all-around team players. Kids develop the technical and motor skills integral to volleyball play. Instructors will have players repeat drills, hone in on technical aspects of each skill, and make fundamental techniques a habit. Players are given consistent feedback, and they make adjustments until they master skills.

Communication skills. Communication between teammates is essential in volleyball. Prior to a game, players must communicate with each other and with their coach. The goal is to establish a strategy, motivate each other, and boost team morale. Teammates must also clearly communicate with each other during the game so everyone is clear on whose ball it is, or when the ball is ‘out,’ for example. Lessons often include drills that specifically focus on communication between players.

Team building and cooperation. Given that this is a team sport, learning how to effectively work with others is a primary part of volleyball lessons. Students learn how to share the court and work together. Kids and teens develop and improve their emotional intelligence. Teammates learn to read others’ emotions and respond to each other. They engage in conflict resolution, share encouraging words, and listen to each others’ challenges. These skills will be beneficial in future academic and professional lives.

Athleticism. Many believe the primary benefit to athletics is health and physical fitness. While this is a fantastic benefit for kids and teens in volleyball, there are other advantages to athletics. For example, it  encourages discipline and goal-setting. Whether you are an amateur athlete or an Olympian, there are always skills or techniques you can improve—another level to advance to. In volleyball lessons, kids and teens begin to understand an athletic mindset. They develop traits like optimism, strength, and patience that will benefit them in other areas.

    Five benefits of volleyball lessons

Encourages a healthy, active lifestyle. Volleyball lessons offered weekly encourage kids or teens to commit to physical activity. Through exercise, kids gain physical fitness. It also releases endorphins, serotonin, and dopamine. These improve overall well-being and happiness. That awesome feeling kids and teens have after volleyball lessons encourages them to make a habit out of exercise.

Introduce your child to the sport. Volleyball programs allow kids to “taste-test” the sport.  They don’t need to commit to the full-time schedule of a competitive team. Lessons teach fundamentals of the sport, familiarizing players with it. It’s an ideal way for kids who are new to the sport to bridge the gap between curiosity and commitment.

A supportive, non-competitive environment makes it fun. Volleyball lessons are focused on helping kids and teens improve their skills and techniques. Everyone is there to recognize their areas of difficulty, to learn and get better. The environment is supportive and not ultra-competitive. It helps return “fun” to the sport that may be missing in other settings. Lessons listed above include gameplay in their curriculum, but the programs keep things light.

Aim for advancement. The above point notwithstanding, many volleyball programs listed here offer lessons at higher levels within the same organization. Knowing there is an advanced level they can enrol in the next gives kids a goal to work toward. Some lessons provide a report card at the end of the program, too. Players learn their strengths and weaknesses and hear recommendations to take their game to the next level. Some programs award kids certificates or medals to recognize players’ achievements. Volleyball lessons are a fantastic way to prep kids or teens who want to join a school volleyball team, or house league.

Small group sessions. Many volleyball lessons listed here offer low player-to-coach ratios. Kids and teens get personalized instruction, and identify their strengths, along with areas for improvement. This also eliminates stress novice players may feel in a large group setting. For kids who thrive in small groups, volleyball lessons may be the perfect option to encourage their love for the sport.

What to look for in volleyball lessons

While volleyball lessons primarily aim to improve kids’ and teens’ volleyball technique, different organizations offer slightly different programming. So, it is important to consider what you and your child are looking for prior to enrolling them in lessons. Here are some questions you may consider asking a volleyball program to decide if it is right for your family:
